Monthly theme - September 2023 - Data Visualisation

Published on September 4, 2023

Each month we introduce a new theme to The Data Lab Community. This is a way for us to anchor discussions, content and events each month, and also allows us to take our community members on a journey of growth and development in the longer term.

This September our theme is 'Data Visualisation'.

The rise of data visualisation has been a crucial evolution in our data-driven world. In an era inundated with vast amounts of information, data visualisations serve as a powerful means of distilling complex data sets into understandable and actionable insights. Data visualisation plays a vital role - enabling individuals and organisations to communicate their data effectively, uncover hidden patterns, and make informed decisions.

Earlier this year, we launched a Data Visualisation group within The Data Lab Community, and we've been blown away by the response from the data viz professionals and enthusiasts within our community! After a number of wildly popular events and countless interesting convos - we're delighted to bring our focus to Data Viz this September, and we've got lots in store for you to get involved with.

What's coming up?

The Data Lab Community’s Data Visualisation Competition has landed! We’re looking for everyone from seasoned data visualisers who know D3 and Tableau like the back of their hands to those looking to dip their toes into this exciting craft for the first time. Entering the competition will allow you to take your skills to the next level, demonstrate your abilities and raise your profile in front of a global data and AI community. The winner will be announced live at Data Summit 2023 and receive a prize package worth over £1,000. All shortlisted entries will have their work exhibited to over 500 data and AI professionals at Data Summit. If you think you are up for the challenge, you’ll have five weeks to craft your project to be in with a chance of winning. Learn more and register your interest here.

For our second community Women in Data & AI meetup, we'll be joined by Tricia Govindasamy, an award-winning South African GIS and Data Science Specialist who will dig deep into the reasons why data visualisations are so important. This session will showcase specific case studies of award-winning data visualisation projects developed in Africa ranging from open data tools, to data journalism pieces and mapping projects. It will go beyond data and design to discuss why data visualisations are important, why we create them, and ultimately, what is the end goal. Join us for this opportunity to connect with women working in data, AI & tech, to build relationships, share challenges, and explore opportunities to support one another.

If you've seen bespoke or unusual data-visualisations on the web there's a good chance they were made with d3.js. This session is a hands-on introduction to d3. In it you'll learn: What d3 is, and what it's not; capabilities of the library; how to use 'data-bindings' to power your visualisations; how to manipulate SVG elements to represent your data; where to go next.

Get involved!
