Monthly theme - November 2025 - Data Visualisation

Published on October 24, 2025

November's theme in The Data Lab Community is Data Visualisation.

This month, we're returning our focus to one of the most powerful forms of communication in data and AI. In a world overflowing with information, data visualisation transforms raw numbers into insights and pulls out stories from the data.

From dashboards and reports used to inform real-time decisions, to infographics and charts that bring data journalism to life, effective data visualisation helps to turn analysis into something people can actually understand.

We've got a whopper of a month planned with in person events in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, plus lots of webinars for those joining online. In addition, we're excited to announce the return of our Data Visualisation Competition - keep reading to find out more!

Our data viz comp returns!
With a top prize worth over £500 and a chance of eternal glory, our data visualisation competition provides the perfect opportunity to sharpen and showcase your data viz skills!

As part of our activities throughout the month, we're hosting and supporting a number of events related to our theme. Make sure to register for the events you'd like to attend via the links below!

Our next Aberdeen meetup will explore practical data viz techniques and real examples that teams and individuals from industry, the public sector, and academia can apply immediately.

Join María Fernanda Callejón, Data Visualisation Specialist and Marketing Analyst, Flourish (part of Canva), for this beginner-friendly session, which breaks down the science behind effective charts. You’ll discover the visual elements that encode information, learn how our brains naturally compare and read data, and walk away with tips and tricks for choosing the right visualisation for any dataset, no matter what tool you’re using.

Join us to explore how great data visualisation can bridge the gap between analytics and impact. We’ll cover both the art and the strategy of visual storytelling with data and discuss how to ensure data is used to its full potential, understood, and acted upon.

In today’s data-rich environment, presenting data isn’t enough. The most impactful visualisations go beyond showing the numbers — they craft narratives that resonate, persuade, and inspire action. In this webinar, you will discover how to transform your visualisations from simple reporting tools into powerful communication vehicles.

Two years ago, Jenny Gates joined us to explore the fundamentals of accessibility in data visualisation. Now, Jenny is back for a refresher on how accessibility in data visualisation has evolved. With new insights, experience, and emerging technologies shaping the field, she’ll revisit key principles and reflect on what’s changed since the first session in 2023.
