Reflecting on 2023: Georges Corbineau, Data Visualisation Specialist, Moody's Corporation
Every December in The Data Lab Community, we like to take a bit of time to reflect on the year that's been. We ask our members to share their highs and lows, the challenges they've faced, and what they've learned along the way.
Next up to the plate we have Georges Corbineau, a Data Visualisation Specialist at Moody's Corporation. George's 2023 saw him return to Edinburgh after a challenging spell away. Since he's been back he's not looked back! He's thrown himself into the data & community, hosting his first ever webinar on Data Viz (which you can watch here!) before progressing to speaking on stage to a capacity crowd at Data Summit in November!

Without further ado, let's hear from George!
"This year 2023 has been full of changes and new beginnings for me.
Finding myself in a difficult situation in Surrey, not feeling at the right place, I decided to move back to Edinburgh where I finished my master's degree years ago. The decision was full of uncertainties and hope that I would be able to meet, share and learn around new communities.
Moving was (unsurprisingly) a challenge. I had to find a new home without really knowing how much time it was going to take and I had to find a way to move my stuff (... including an upright piano) up there. Luckily, a friend I met at Uni was able to have me around while searching for my new place and all the moving went smoothly.
After all that initial stress behind, the next step was to find places to exchange and share. I contacted The Data Lab who had sponsored my postgrad year at Uni, and they openly invited me within their community. Shortly after, I was talking at my first webinar and got to share about my work, lucky me! All went well, lots of positive feedback and new people to talk about dataviz ☕️
Iterating on that, I had the chance to talk at Data Summit in front of real people this time. Waaaay more stressful but also waaaay easier than in front of a screen!
Lastly, on the dataviz side, I attended the Information+ conference and got to meet Shirley Wu that, along with Nadieh Bremer, inspired me to pursue this career. I was grateful to be able to say a big thank you.
With everything going on, I didn't get the time to work on any personal projects, so that will be for next year!
Seeing these new things compared to next year, moving was definitely the right decision, can't wait to see what next year has for me!"
