Our monthly themes for the year (and how to get involved!)

If you’ve been with us for a while, you will know that each month we introduce a new theme to The Data Lab Community. Themes offer us a way to focus on the topics that resonate with members and ensure we keep abreast of the latest developments in data & AI.

Our monthly themes help us to explore emerging trends, share practical insights and spark meaningful discussions throughout the year. Through a combination of online discussions, events, webinars, blogs and resources, we hope to focus the community as we learn and grow together over the course of the year.  

With that in mind, we are very excited to unveil our themes for 2025. We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to decide these themes, and we hope you will agree that we have an exciting year ahead of us! 


January: Data & AI Trends for 2025 

We’re kicking off the year by analysing the trends and innovations set to shape 2025. From advancements in generative AI to evolving data ethics frameworks, this month is all about looking forward to what may be coming over the horizon. 

Sub-themes could include: 

  • Generative AI Advancements 

  • Industry-specific applications 

 

February: Skills & Talent 

February will focus on identifying and exploring the skills needed to excel as a Data & AI professional. From technical expertise to soft skills, we’ll explore career paths and take a look at how you can grow as a professional. 

Sub-themes could include: 

  • Career progression 

  • Technical skills

  •  Soft skills 

  • Upskilling  

 

March: Ethics 

As Data and AI’s influence grows, so does the importance of ethical practices. Join us in March for discussions on fairness, bias mitigation, transparency, and governance in Data and AI development. 

Sub-themes could include: 

  • Fairness and bias mitigation 

  • AI Auditing and regulation 

  • Ethical frameworks and guidelines 

 

April: Life Sciences 

Explore the transformative role of AI and data in life sciences. This month, we’ll delve into biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare innovations. 

Sub-themes could include: 

  • Innovations in biotechnology 

  • AI in pharmaceuticals 

  • Computational biology 

 

May: Navigating Data & AI 

In May we’ll host our flagship conference, DataFest, where we’ll move beyond the hype as we discuss how to navigate AI in practice. We’ll bring together thought leaders and practitioners to share insights and strategies for harnessing the potential of Data and AI. 

Sub-themes could include: 

  • AI opportunities and challenges 

  • Data & AI Strategy 

  • Developing data & AI policies 

 

June: Geospatial Data 

Discover how geospatial data can be used to drive insights and innovation. From urban planning to environmental monitoring, this month will highlight geospatial applications and tools. 

Sub-themes could include: 

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) 

  • Environmental monitoring 

  • Urban planning 

 

July: Sustainability

Data & AI can be a powerful ally in addressing climate change and achieving sustainability goals. However, intensive AI models and applications also come with a cost to the environment. In July, we’ll explore solutions and strategies for a net-zero future.  

Sub-themes could include: 

  • Net zero
  • Renewable energy 

  • Carbon footprint reduction 

  • Waste reduction 

 

August: Housing

In August we’ll focus on how technology is impacting housing and the built environment. We’ll look at how tech is changing the way we think about inclusive and accessible housing design, as well as discuss developments in construction and urban development. 

Sub-themes could include: 

  • Built Environment
  • Smart cities 

  • Construction
  • Energy efficiency in buildings 

 

September: Financial Sector 

We’ll explore how Data and AI is reshaping the financial industry, from fraud detection to algorithmic trading and enhanced customer experiences. We’ll discuss risks, regulations, and how to harness AI for better decision-making. 

Sub-themes could include: 

  • Fraud detection  

  • Customer experience 

  • Risk management 

 

October: Health 

AI is transforming healthcare, from diagnostics to personalised medicine. This month, we’ll dive into the latest breakthroughs, challenges, and ethical considerations of using technology in healthcare.  

Sub-themes could include: 

  • Personalised medicine 

  • Healthcare productivity / efficiency 

  • Preventative healthcare 

 

November: Data Visualisation 

Data Visualisation is always an incredibly popular topic in the community, and it's back for 2025! We’ll explore tools, techniques, and strategies for turning complex datasets into compelling narratives that drive action and insight. 

Sub-themes could include:

  • Accessibility in data viz 

  • Visual storytelling techniques 

  • Data visualisation skills  

 

December: Reflection 

In our final month, we’ll reflect on the year’s key takeaways and look forward to what’s ahead in 2026. Join us for discussions on some of the lessons learned throughout the year!

  • Key lessons from the year 

  • Success stories

As The Data Lab Community continues to evolve and grow, ensuring that we are working to cultivate a culture of collaboration within the ecosystem has never been more important.  

Which is why we invite you to contribute to our events programme. If you or your organisation are passionate about one of our monthly themes and you’d like to organise an event or a webinar during that month, we’d love to hear from you

Our events programme is very popular, with regular sell-out events and jam-packed webinars.
