Monthly theme - June 2025 - Geospatial Data

Published on May 22, 2025

Throughout June the theme in The Data Lab Community is 'Geospatial Data'. Geospatial data refers to data that is tied to a geographic location on, or near, the Earth's surface. It is used in lots of your favourite apps, from tracking deliveries to monitoring your fitness. However, beyond this, geospatial data enables insights for decision making in urban planning through to disaster response, and through the linkage to physical location, can reveal patterns and trends that may otherwise have gone unnoticed.

Our Geospatial Data guest blog 🗞️
To mark the beginning of our Geospatial Month, we sat down with Alex Gordon (Geovation Scotland) and Jonathan Lewis (Geovation UK) to chat about all things geospatial data. In the blog we explored how location and geospatial data are driving innovation, the challenges and opportunities within the sector, and what the future holds for this rapidly evolving field.

Events 🎟️
As part of our activities throughout the month, we're hosting and supporting a number of events related to our theme. Make sure to register for the events you'd like to attend via the links below!

Join us for our monthly community meetup where we'll be discussing all things geospatial data and looking at some fascinating projects and initiatives currently going on in this space. Whether it's your first meetup, or you are a regular - we'll have plenty of opportunity for you to connect with your local data & AI community.

Welcome to the EdinburghJS March Meetup! Our theme this month is "Geo and JS" - looking at Geo data and maps. We have Mike Moran speaking about personal geo projects, and Swagata Biswas and Luke Smallwood talking about geo concepts and their work at Esri.

This webinar will explore opportunities to better understand the operational performance of road networks using connected vehicle data, and how this can support the development of more effective interventions and adaptation strategies.

  • #GeomobEDI - 24 June 2025 18:00 - 20:00 BST [Edinburgh, UK] - SUPPORTED EVENT

Geomob is event series for geospatial enthusiasts that meets every few months in various European cities. The Edinburgh chapter is organised by Gala Camacho, with talks on marketing in geospatial and open source hardware for environmental sensing.

About 3 million people in the UK (around 4.5% of the population) and 300 million worldwide have Colour Vision Deficiency (CVD), also known as colour blindness, according to Colour Blind Awareness. Join for an insightful webinar discussing the link between geospatial data, historic environment mapping and accessibility!
